Xinhua News Agency | Two People Under Police Investigation for Spreading Rumors About a "Shanghai Lockdown"

On March 22, two Shanghai residents warned their family and friends in a WeChat group that a citywide lockdown was imminent. The chat records quickly spread online. The next day, Shanghai police issued a statement announcing that the two individuals were under investigation for allegedly fabricating and deliberately spreading false information. The lockdown life—defined by confinement—also became a form of linguistic imprisonment, where even speaking about it was forbidden.
