Shanghai, a large city of 25 million permanent residents, contains about 90,000 visually impaired persons with disabilities, of whom about 30,000 are totally blind. Several of them are suffering from hunger and facing information isolation. Not being able to see makes them like an isolated island. This article documents the situation of three groups of visually impaired people in Shanghai. They are confined to massage parlors, hotels and dormitories. The longest one has been locked up for 35 days. Unprepared or ill-prepared, they all face hunger and hardship.
