During the two-month lockdown in Shanghai, several local anti-domestic violence volunteers received more than ten requests for help from victims — a number roughly three times their usual workload. The top priority in assisting domestic violence victims is to move them to a safe location, but this seemingly simple task became impossible under the lockdown’s “no leaving home” policy. In other words, victims were forced to remain trapped under the same roof as their abusers. And the response they received when seeking protection was: “Have they ever thought about why they were being beaten?”
