A blind person in Shanghai tries to grab groceries via smartphone and uses an open flame to cook for the first time

Due to the pandemic lockdown, many visually impaired individuals—unable to hire hourly help and receiving mostly raw ingredients—have had to learn to cook using open flames for the first time. According to the latest data from the Shanghai Disabled Persons' Federation, there are 100,000 people with visual impairments registered in Shanghai, including approximately 35,000 who are fully or nearly blind. Under lockdown, challenges such as buying groceries, shortages of essential supplies, and reduced income have made everyday life even more difficult for this vulnerable group.
