After being prevented from going out to seek medical treatment, a man in Shanghai slashed the neck of a neighborhood committee director with a knife and then attempted suicide.

On the afternoon of May 20, Shanghai police issued a statement reporting that at approximately 8:20 a.m. that day, the Minhang Branch of the Public Security Bureau received a 110 emergency call about a knife attack in a residential compound on Laohumin Road. Police officers quickly arrived at the scene and brought the suspect, a 64-year-old man surnamed Wen, under control.

According to the investigation, Wen slashed a neighborhood committee official, a 60-year-old man surnamed Zhang, with a fruit knife following a dispute, and then injured himself with the same knife. Both Wen and Zhang were treated at the hospital and are not in life-threatening condition. The case is currently under further investigation.

Later that day, the official Weibo account of Meilong Town in Minhang District released a statement, confirming that Wen (male, 64) has a history of depression. A misunderstanding arose between him and the neighborhood official regarding the issuance of an exit permit, which led to Wen attacking Zhang with a knife. He then injured himself and jumped from a building
