Hongqiao Railway Station used to be the starting point of many people's struggle to get to Shanghai. But now, for reasons that are well known, many are lining up to leave. after Shanghai announced on May 16 that it was declaring a phased resumption of work and resumption of business, many Shanghai residents flocked to the area, some going home to visit their relatives, and some saying goodbye to Shanghai for good. Among the departing crowds, Yu Lin, a rider from Shanghai's Xuhui district, ferried a dozen departures from Shanghai to the Hongqiao train station on his battery-operated vehicle. With public transportation yet to be fully restored, those without private cars have to walk to the station, in some cases for tens of kilometers. In Shanghai now, Yu Lin has seen the backs of too many departures. He says that having witnessed a group of people leaving, he is also contemplating his own and their common fate.
