Elderly people face even more difficulties under lockdown: many are not proficient with smartphones, making it hard for them to take part in online grocery group purchases; they are often physically weak or suffer from chronic illnesses, putting them at risk of running out of essential medication; due to a lack of clear scientific information, they may experience unnecessary panic; and isolation at home can lead to extreme loneliness for those living alone. In response, many young people have stepped up — organizing group purchases in their neighborhoods, joining volunteer groups, and offering care and assistance to elderly neighbors living alone.
