On May 10th, an audio recording of a conversation between staff from the Shanghai CDC and two American women went viral online. In the dialogue, the so-called CDC official urged the two foreign friends to follow instructions and go to a centralized quarantine site. However, one of the women reasoned firmly, listing point by point why she insisted on continuing home isolation, while also advocating for the rights of her Chinese neighbors. The other woman couldn’t help but lose her temper multiple times, angrily criticizing the CDC for lacking scientific understanding and putting uninfected residents in the community at risk. In the end, the communication among the three ended without resolution. At the conclusion of the call, the CDC staff pretended the “signal was bad” and hung up, even resulting in a bizarre exchange of “Are u there? No!” like phrases.
