On April 30, 2022, the WeChat video channel “Shanze Music” published an ensemble performance titled “Do You Hear the People Sing?”. The video is no longer available.
“Do You Hear the People Sing?” is a song from the musical “Les Misérables”. Its Cantonese version became widely used during the Umbrella Movement and the Anti-Extradition Bill protests in Hong Kong. After July 2019, the English version was collectively removed from major music platforms in mainland China.
During the 2022 Shanghai lockdown, the song resurfaced on WeChat Moments, circulating widely as a subtle act of resistance, solidarity, and emotional expression under heavy censorship.
