Nearly one month after Shanghai lifted its lockdown, although all industries have officially resumed work, most restaurants are still prohibited from offering dine-in services. Even the very few restaurants in low-risk areas allowed to serve customers indoors may not exceed 50% capacity and still face the constant risk of being shut down. Shanghai’s restaurant industry has launched various creative self-rescue efforts. To avoid exposing their operating status, many businesses seal their doors and windows tightly with plastic bags; some set up small outdoor dining areas at the entrances of residential compounds, in front of restaurants, in phone booths, or on rooftops; others even rent hotel rooms for customers to dine in, or pretend to hire waiters, only to “terminate” them after the meal.
