No “revenge spending” seen after Shanghai’s reopening, dragging down the pace of economic recovery.

Due to epidemic prevention lockdowns, in April 2022, Shanghai’s total retail sales of consumer goods fell by 48% compared to the same period last year, with the most severely impacted accommodation and catering industry plunging by 69%. This contributed to an 11% nationwide decline in retail sales in April. The latest data released on June 16 shows that retail sales in China decreased by 6.7% year-on-year in May, remaining sluggish.
